When Kat Black opened Kat Black Interiors in 2021, she brought with her over fifteen years of design expertise shaped by an unexpected foundation: professional organizing. That background still influences everything she does. Before she became a lead interior designer at a prominent Dallas firm, Black spent years helping clients impose order on chaos. She learned that function is not separate from beauty. They are inseparable. A home that looks stunning but does not work for the way a family actually lives is only half finished.
Black's approach begins with listening. She works closely with each client to understand not just what they want their home to look like, but how they want it to feel. That conversation happens before finishes are chosen or mood boards are built. She asks about children and pets, about hallways crossed fifty times a day, about the way light moves through a room at different hours. Those answers shape everything downstream: fabric selections, color palettes, hard surfaces, edge profiles, even how cabinetry gets customized. Tell us who you are and what you stand for in your work.
A
I graduated from the University of North Texas with a design degree and a minor in business in 2008. I worked as a design drafter part time for four years before opening my first business as a professional organizer in 2011. That experience still shapes my deeply functional approach to beautiful spaces.
I moved into a full time position as a lead interior designer in 2014 with a well known design firm in Dallas, and in 2021 I took the leap to open Kat Black Interiors. For me, design starts with listening. I work closely with each client to understand not just what they want their home to look like, but how they want it to feel. I describe our work as layered, maximizing natural materials, and refined architectural details. Spaces with a confident edge that stand apart without feeling overdone.
Clients return to me for my judgment as much as my aesthetic. I know when to push, when to hold back, and what will still feel right in ten years.

Tell us about a working relationship that felt exactly right. What made it work?
A
We have a multi-repeat client who has been doing their entire home in phases over time. We have gotten to know them well, and their ethos has become trust Kat's vision, she has never steered us wrong. It is very easy to design for them because my style is their style. They trust the process, they trust me, and the result exceeds their expectations every time because I am able to make decisions and throw in fun surprises and details without asking permission first. They are fun, they love to laugh, and they do not sweat the small stuff. They are the absolute best client.

How do you design for the way a family actually lives, not just the way a home looks in photos?
A
The way a family lives guides almost every decision we make, long before we ever talk finishes. Are there kids? Pets? Is this a hallway or stairs that gets crossed fifty times a day, or a living room that is mostly for company? Those answers shape everything downstream. They guide the fabrics we spec, the colors we choose, which hard surfaces can handle real life, edge profiles on countertops, layout flow, and even how we customize cabinetry.
When I walk into an existing home I pay attention to the architecture, the millwork, functionality, balance and scale. I can almost always tell if a client has chosen a home that does not work for how they live and reflect their style. The challenge then becomes how to honor the architecture of the home and the client's style together, so they work in harmony the way the client needs it to function and feel.

Tell us about one of your projects that really stuck with you.
A
Lake Forest was a very challenging project. It was a complete gut with an addition. We moved stairs, moved a lot of walls, and completely transformed the space. In the design development phase we worked closely with the client and architect through many revisions until it was perfect. We layered natural woods, millwork, and natural finishes to create a grand space that still felt livable, warm and welcoming. It pushed our patience, our creativity, and the result still feels gorgeous four years later.
